A Note on Fan Art
I thought I would write briefly about something you might have been wondering about. I do a fair bit of fan art! I also sell a lot of my work as prints. I don't, however, sell prints of any of my fan art.
In the world of comic conventions, it is not only common for people to sell derivative works based on comics, movies, television shows and so on - it's almost expected. We decided early on that Red Nebula Studios would only sell work that was original, keeping our own brand unique. It's a joy at shows when people come to our booth and appreciate our work for what it is.
Obviously, the legality of selling works based on existing intellectual property can and has become an issue. I've seen friends online served cease and desist notifications over items they're selling, long before the recent hullabaloo over the Jayne hat. (I'll keep my opinion of that to myself, but rest assured, it involves words that would be censored on network TV.) Fortunately, nearly all companies seem to be fine with non-profit fan art, at least. After all, it's increasing awareness of their product and keeping their stories alive!
All this to say... well, I'm guessing a few of you follow me because of some of the fan art I've done - and believe me, there's more in the works! I've had a few requests for prints of those pieces. I'm sorry to say that I can't do that, but I'm very glad you enjoy them as much as I do!
Really, this entire post was just so I could use the word "hullabaloo" in a sentence.
However, since you've humored me this far, have a sketch of some Ood.
