One Amazing Weekend

Wow.

No, seriously. Wow.

Last Wednesday, May 22nd, I put up a couple of teaser photos of my Garrus cosplay on here, Facebook, and deviantArt... you know, just to show a few friends what I'd been working on all this time.

Last Thursday, Robbie and I headed off to load in at Phoenix Comicon, and then get checked into our hotel room for the weekend to come.

And then, everything went wonderfully crazy.

One of my workmates asked to post the pictures on Tumblr, which I said was fine. At roughly the same time, the photos got spotted by someone at Bioware, and the next thing I knew, I was on their Facebook page. Between the two, there have been over 20,000 shares and likes, and hundreds of comments. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and has made an already great weekend into something amazing and more than a little surreal.

Meanwhile, most of our attention was on the con itself. We've been exhibiting for the past 3 years now, and finally - mostly - have the hang of getting loaded in and set up for the show. The convention hall had spread yet again, attendance was up, and the entirety of downtown Phoenix was buzzing all weekend long.

There were a couple of hiccups, mind you. The extra attendance meant that there were some issues with overcrowding at times. Sunday was... interesting, shall we say. A fire alarm was tripped midway through the afternoon and the entire building was evacuated. There was grumbling to be heard, of course - but all things considered, I don't think I would've ever imagined the evacuation of thousands of people going as smoothly as it did. Emergency services were on the scene within minutes, and they were able to start letting exhibitors back in to get to our tables less than 20 minutes after the whole thing started. There were no panics, and to the best of my knowledge, no one was hurt - aside from a few stitches in peoples' sides from climbing the stairs!

The upshot was that it still proved to be a great turnout, an enthusiastic crowd, and I think - I hope - an extremely cool experience for all involved.

Overall, had a great time, both in costume and out! I will be posting a more thorough blog post about our own experience with the convention tomorrow, including photos. See you then!
