Phoenix Comicon 2013 Highlights
And now for a slightly more coherent account of our weekend at Phoenix Comicon!
Phoenix Comicon took place in the convention center in beautiful downtown Phoenix, Arizona, from May 23rd through the 26th, 2013. This year, we decided to book a hotel room for convenience and ease of travel to and from the convention. We stayed at the Sheraton hotel, and I cannot say enough good things about our experience there. They had special self-parking rates for hotel guests who were also convention attendees, as well as offering complimentary Wi-Fi in the rooms. The hotel rates were lower than usual, as well. I think the hotels in the downtown area truly appreciate the kind of business a healthy comic con can bring in! Regardless of discounts, the hotel staff made sure we had a terrific stay. Definitely recommend them.
We were up on the 17th floor. Looking out the window kind of felt like looking out of an airplane!
I don't know convention figures just yet, but by my estimation, there were at least 5.5 x 1042 people in attendance, give or take. Here's a pair of photos of the same dealer room aisle before the convention opened and during the day:
There's always so much going on at a convention, it's hard to know where to begin! However, here are some of the highlights.
Probably my favorite ACEO I've ever drawn:
Finding a Jurassic Park jeep in a parking garage (it was later being shown in front of the convention center, but running into it in a creepy carpark with pipes that look suspiciously like the ones Ian Malcolm was getting Ellie to follow in the movie was just... neat!)
An impromptu rendition of "Do You Hear the People Sing" on the escalator by a cast that included Fantine, Cosette, and at least two revolutionaries (and, erm, possibly me singing along because Les Mis is AWESOME):
The Old Spice Mandalorian (the picture is by the person holding it, the amazing Anabel Martinez, and the Old Spice Mando is portrayed by Marcus Washington)
Severus Snape personally endorsing one of my handmade wands. Apparently the quality was up to his stringent standards!
And then, here's the first of many photos I'll be posting of my Garrus cosplay from the show. In this case, I got to interrogate a small, likely indoctrinated, creepy ball-jointed cat doll. Who looks thoroughly thrilled about it! Which is, if anything, even creepier...
(That photo and that doll both belong to DemonicNeko)
John Barrowman's voice on the intercom...
And last but not least, getting to meet Gigi Edgley, who played Chiana, my favorite character in Farscape. She was a total sweetheart. :D
Tomorrow will include more cosplay photos, both my own and many of the other amazing costumes we got to see at the show.
