I Love Mythology

I Love Mythology by Sarrah Wilkinson - A pinback button design with the words

I wanted to make a design that could encompass some of the somewhat lesser known creatures of mythology - particularly Greek mythology, as that's where a lot of my own interest lies.

This one has the simple phrase "I Love Mythology" (with a heart in place of the word "love"), which stands out even from a distance. Looking closer, you can see that it's surrounded by five creatures of myth:
  • The chimera, a creature with the head of a lion in front, a goat (often fire-breathing) in the middle, and a snake or dragon behind. It's been depicted a number of ways, but this is how I like it best!
  • The hydra, a dragon or snakelike creature which grows two heads for every one cut from its body.
  • A winged horse. The most famous of these was Pegasus, which sprang from the severed head of Medusa.
  • A centaur, often depicted as excellent archers and rowdy barbarians, but modern myth has given them more of a scholarly bent - probably because of the more civilized Chiron of legend.
  • A siren - though often depicted as women with the bodies and wings of birds, some renderings show them as mermaid-like creatures. In any case, their haunting singing is said to lure sailors into wreck their ships on the siren's rocks.
