There was once a village in the shadow of an enormous, craggy mountain. Often, great plumes of smoke would billow from the mountain's top. The villagers had heard of "volcanoes" from traveling minstrels, so they felt certain that description fit the bill for their mountain. They named it "Old Smokey".
One day, an artist in search of inspiration came wandering through the village. She'd seen volcanoes before, and this mountain looked nothing like what she had seen! Curious, she arranged an expedition up, up, up, into it's treacherous, craggy peaks. There, she found a cave, and in it, an enormous beast, with scales the color of bronze, deep asleep. Now and then, it would exhale a billowing cloud of dark smoke which would go venting through the cavern's ceiling.
The rest of the expedition wanted to leave, preferably with great haste! But the artist was undaunted. She had heard that dragons were very proud creatures, and usually not prone to ferocity unless provoked. She roused the beast from its slumber with great caution. While the dragon was a bit grumpy at having been awakened - for he, like many of us, was not a morning person! - he proved to be quite amiable once the artist explained that she would dearly like to draw a portrait of the real "Old Smokey".
