Fossil Drake Skull Sculpture
I'd done one fossil before, and was itching to do another one - I love how these turn out!
This is a one-of-a-kind sculpture of a miniature dragon (drake) skull fossil embedded in reddish stone. The bones are made from polymer clay, and the red stone is DAS air-drying terra cotta clay - lovely, messy stuff that it is! I texture the surrounding "stone" to make it look as though a paleontologist has been chipping away at it to reveal the fossil within. The whole thing is finished with a wash of acrylic paint to give it more depth and bring out all of the details. It's quite three-dimensional, as you can see from the other photos, and stands out nicely from the backdrop. It fits nicely inside of the frame, but is not attached - the sculpture can be removed.
I've loved dinosaurs and dragons both since before I even knew how to talk, so combining fantasy with paleontology just seemed natural to me!
This one-of-a-kind sculpture was sold 1/5/2013 and went all the way to Austria!
